In a refined manner, Tarek Fatah continues to promote Salafist agenda in North American media

The recent events in Syria have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the deep divide within Muslims. It has also made clear that Saudi Arabia and its Salafist Wahhabi minions in the Gulf are the major promoters of global terrorism.  That is why it is pathetic to see that false binaries, half truths and conspiracy theories are still being peddled to obscure the key role of Saudi Arabia in fomenting terrorism.

The West’s Fatal Attraction: Saudi Arabia and Wahhabism – by Sadiq Ameen http://criticalppp.com/archives/267881

Here is an example of another debunked conspiracy theory that was recently being promoted by the likes of Tarek Fatah.

In an article published by the Canadian CBC website, Tarek Fatah says that many people in Western institutions such as governments, academia and the media have fallen for the “narrative” that because of a history of sectarian bloodshed, radical Sunnis and Shias couldn’t possibly collaborate.

He says it’s true, for example, that bin Laden viewed the Shias as non-Muslims, but bin Laden also considered the establishment of a global Islamic state more important than dwelling on sectarian differences, which is why he never fought the Iranians.

As further proof of Iranian co-operation with al-Qaeda, Fatah cites an example involving Ahmed Said Khadr, the late father of Canadian-born extremist Omar Khadr and a known al-Qaeda operative. According to Michelle Shepherd’s 2008 book, Guantanamo’s Child: The Untold Story of Omar Khadr, Ahmed drove his daughter, Zaynab, to Tehran so she could marry another al-Qaeda member.f

By connecting Al Qaeda’s terrorist acts and intentions with Iran, Tarek Fatah is making yet another faulty and prejudicial assumption. It is an assumption that lacks substance but is likely to hurt Shias, Sunni Barelvis, Ahmadis, Christians and other victims of Saudi-AlQaeda terrorists worldwide whose connections are deliberately being muddled by Tarek’s nonsensical conspiracy theories.

Unfortunately, these assertions by Fatah are obfuscatory and dishonest on many different levels. This Sunni-Shia and Iran-Saudi binary is not only incorrect but also very helpful to promote the Al Qaeda’s Salafist Deobandi agenda.

Osama bin Laden does not need to tolerate sectarian differences – he and his group simply eliminate all non-Wahhabis (including Sunni Sufis, Shias Ahmadis, Alawites, Christians, Jews, communists, atheists etc).

While Fatah’s ridiculous claims are unsubstantiated, this is what Osama bin Laden’s main deputy in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi, had to say about Shias:

Iraq’s al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has declared “all-out war” on Shia Muslims in Iraq in response to a US-Iraqi offensive on the town of Tal Afar, according to an audio clip posted on the internet. “The al-Qaeda Organisation in the Land of Two Rivers (Iraq) is declaring all-out war on the Rafidha (a pejorative term for Shia), wherever they are in Iraq,” said al-Zarqawi.

Similarly, Al Qaeda affiliated Deobandi groups Sipah Sahaba (ASWJ-LeJ) and Taliban have killed at least 21,000 Shia Muslims and thousands of Sunni Sufi Muslims in Pakistan.

Making such false-neutral claims is a typical tactic to cloak the overt and covert support of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE.

As per his own public profile, Tarek Fatah spent nearly 11 years in Saudi Arabia between Pakistan and Canada.  The rampant anti-Semitic and anti-Shia environment of Saudi Arabia is no secret and Tarek Fatah spent 11 years in such a society where the 20-30% Shia population is brutally suppressed.  Fatah has clearly picked up this bigotry.  Here is an example of his anti-Semitic activism (photo).

His public anti-Shia activism is even worse.  Flashing his wife’s Shia credentials on twitter to deflect the genuine criticism of his anti Shia attitude is both disingenuous and insensitive and makes no difference. Many ISI Taliban apologists in Pakistan themselves come from Shia background and are married and related to Shias such as Najam Sethi, Ejaz Haider, Talat Hussain etc. Tarek Fatah continues to take the same anti-Shia positions of Salafist hatemongers and Pakistan Army types even as there is an ongoing Shia Genocide in Pakistan.

Whether it was his bizarre manner to defend the Saudi and Pakistan army backed Bahrain Monarchy, his gossip-based slander of the Hazara Shias currently facing the brunt of a genocidal campaign in Pakistan or his unsubstantiated efforts to blame Iran instead of Saudi Arabia for Al Qaeda terrorism, there is a common thread in Tarek’s intellectual dishonesty. http://criticalppp.com/archives/261217

Sectarianism and racism: The dishonest narratives on Bahrain – by Hasnain Magsi http://criticalppp.com/archives/43444

When “Takfiri Tarek” endorsed the apostasization of Hazrat Abu Talib, was he acting any different than the raving Salafi-Wahabi clerics. http://worldshiaforum.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/tarek-fatah-apostatizes-prophet-muhammads-beloved-uncle-by-irfan-qadri/

At every instance Tarek Fatah has tried to obfuscate or remove the sepcific Wahhabi-Deobandi identity of Islamist terrorism worldwide. By taking the topic off tangent, Fatah tries to deflect attention from the fact that Takfiri Wahhabi Deobandi militants are responsible for the overwhelming majority of Islamist terrorist activities in the world today. A favourite tactic of Fatah is to divert the topic by changing it and going off into tangential issues. Not unlike Ijaz Haider, for Fatah, grieving Shia can simply be reduced to Iranian fifth columnists.

It is already distressing to see the US and France support the Al-Qaeda dominated Free Syrian Army just as they supported Al Qaeda’s insurgency in Libya and Salafists in Afghanistan.  The policy of opposing Al Qaeda in Mali and Pakistan while supporting them in Syria and Libya makes no sense on any level and is counter-productive on many different levels.

Indeed, the alleged Iran-AlQaeda or Iran-Taliban link is complete rubbish because Iran nearly went to war with the Taliban when the latter was in control of Afghanistan and providing full sanctuary to Al Qaeda. The events in the last two years in Syria completely destroy the credibility of those who want to promote the ludicrous notion that the Al Qaeda is being supported by Iran. It is a fact that many Iranian diplomats and consulate officials were killed by Taliban after their takeover of Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan. We have huge reservations with Iran’s theologically dominated government structure and Syria’s dictatorship as I do with their human rights record. However to compare them with Saudi Arabia is intellectual dishonesty.

Is Tarek trying to dilute the violence committed by Osama Bin Laden! There is informal and anecdotal evidence that OBL was involved in pogroms against Shias as early as the 1980s during the peak years of the Wahhabi-Deobandi “Jihad” in Afghanistan. Shia Pashtun tribesmen (Tooris) of Parachinar were attacked by the so-called Mujahideen. Osama Bin Laden was an important leader of these fanatics.

However, it is a fact that Iranian diplomats were slaughtered when the Taliban took over Mazar-e-Sharif in 1999 and Iran nearly went to war with the Taliban. The whole world knows the key role and influence of OBL on the Taliban during this time. For Tarek to omit such crucial details shows that such a person cannot be trusted to lead any progressive cause.

Tarek Fatah’s dishonesty serves an important purpose as it seeks to present a false Iran-Saudi or Shia vs Sunni binary. In reality, almost all major acts of terrorism committed by Muslims in the last 30 years belong to the Wahabi-Deobandi school of thought and all can be traced back to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar’s sponsorship of extremism.

The reality is that Shias along with Sunni Sufis, Ahmadis and Christians have been at the forefront in confronting the Taliban in Pakistan. And they continue to pay the price.
