“Not enough Shias killed in Pakistan yet to describe it as genocide”, says Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

More than 580 Shia Muslims of diverse ethnic backgrounds have been killed in Pakistan in 2012 alone at the hands of Deobandi militants of Sipah Sahaba Taliban. In total, more than 20,300 Shias have been killed in the last few decades by the same Takfiri Deobandi militants who are also killing Sunni Barelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, and moderate Deobandis in Pakistan. However, according to Oscar awarding winning film maker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, not enough Shia Muslims have been killed so far to classify it as genocide.

Increasingly, writers and activists in Pakistan and international media are describing the phenomenon as genocide. For example, refer to this resource:

Is Shia genocide an adequate term to describe the plight of Pakistan’s Shia Muslims?

Discourse of Shia genocide:

While we understand why certain countries and organizations (e.g., USA, UK, Iran, EU, UN, Amnesty, HRW, HRCP etc) are hesitating from using the word Shia genocide due to legal and political reasons, we also know that international community does not have a great past record when it comes to warning or classification of genocide for events in Germany, Rwanda, Bosnia and now in Bahrain, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

We ask Sharmeen Chinoy and others to break their silence on State-sponsored Shia genocide in Pakistan in which Pakistan army-sponsored Jihadist militants (Deobandi militants) have been given free hand to kill Shias, Sunni Barelvis, Ahmadis, Christians etc and such killings are accepted as collateral activities by Jihadist assets of the ISI. We also ask rights activists to refrain from misrepresenting Shia genocide in Hazara ethnic or Sunni-Shia sectarian terms.
